Protection & Indemnity survey

Attendance for P&I interests where liability for the cargo or the ship is in question. Service 14 — While it moves.

When you instruct one.

  • A member has a cargo claim and the club needs the ship's side seen independently.
  • Damage is alleged against the vessel and the allegation needs testing.
  • A stowage, ventilation or hold-condition defence has to be evidenced rather than asserted.
  • Security has been demanded and the exposure has to be sized quickly.

What we do.

  • 01Attend on the ship's interest. Making clear, in the report, whose interest is represented.
  • 02Inspect the hold, the stow and the ship's records. Including logs, ventilation records and hatch maintenance.
  • 03Test the allegation against the evidence. What is claimed, against what the vessel's own record shows.
  • 04Size the exposure. A realistic range early, so security can be negotiated rather than guessed at.
  • 05Report for use. Written in the knowledge that it may be read by the other side.

What you receive.

  • A P&I survey report with the interest represented stated on its face.
  • An assessment of the allegation against the vessel's records.
  • An early exposure estimate for reserving and security.
  • Photographic and documentary evidence for the defence file.

What we need from you

  • The claim or allegation as made
  • Vessel, voyage, and the ship's relevant records
  • The club or owner's instructions and authority
  • Port, agent and access arrangements

What we hold ourselves to

  • 2–24hA surveyor instructed from the network nearest the cargo.
  • 24–48hYour update on the appraisal, with photographs and the key information.
  • 72hThe detailed preliminary report, after the survey assessment.
  • 45 daysExpected turnover per mission. The final report follows the loss mitigation or destruction operation.

Attendance on site depends on distance to the port and on terminal and customs access, so that is confirmed on your file rather than promised as one number for every port on the continent.
